Biomes and terrain

Last verified 2026-10-14

Features

In Planet Zoo 2, a Zoopedia biome label describes a species' environments; terrain percentages describe its enclosure's ground mix. Lion is Grassland, Shoebill is Wetlands, and Mountain Hare lists Taiga, Temperate and Tundra.

Based on the official species pages and Basics guide, checked 14 October 2026. Biome examples are source labels, not a complete map-texture inventory.

Biome labels versus enclosure terrain

Read the biome and terrain fields separately. A shared biome does not establish animal compatibility or replace each species' temperature and space requirements.

Species / sourceBiome labelsSelected terrain requirements
LionGrasslandGrass 20-90%; Soil 10-80%
ShoebillWetlandsGrass 20-80%; Waterlogged 20-100%
Mountain HareTaiga, Temperate, TundraGrass 30-100%; Sand 10-30%

Selected fields only. The source pages provide additional terrain, temperature, housing and population requirements.

Terrain painting and surface brushes

Open Terrain, then Paint. The documented brushes include Grass, Soil, Sand, Rock, Snow and Waterlogged. Adjust Intensity, Size and Sharpness, then inspect the animal's Environment requirements.

Snow and Waterlogged are surface brushes. Snow remains only in suitable cold conditions; Coolers can maintain it and Heaters can melt it. A painted surface does not replace temperature control.

Sculpt changes slopes and depressions; Stamps create larger formations. The Basics guide permits sculpting underwater. No complete biome-by-biome texture matrix or all-biomes toggle has been established here, so map-wide availability is not inferred from a species label.

Questions people ask

Is a biome the same as a terrain paint?

No. Read biome labels and terrain percentage ranges as different fields, then check the animal's Environment needs.

Can one map use every biome texture?

The checked sources do not establish a complete map-texture inventory or all-biomes switch. They also do not prove other textures are impossible.
